REVIEW Motorcycle Helmet Intercoms

Sena's SRL-EXT is the only intercom listed as custom-designed for the RF-1400. Everything else goes on with a clamp, and Shoei sells its own Universal Com Holder so you don't have to force that clamp between the shell and the liner. Two popular Shoei accessories, Sena's SRL3 and Cardo's Shoei adapter, are listed for other Shoei models and do not fit the RF-1400.

Why the SRL-EXT Is the Default

Sena designed the SRL-EXT around the RF-1400's shell: the main module sits on the left and a separate battery on the right, so nothing hangs off one side the way a clamp unit does. It runs Sena's Mesh Intercom 3.0 with Open Mesh and Group Mesh for up to 24 riders, plus Bluetooth intercom for up to four, with Harman Kardon speakers and microphone. Sena lists up to 12 hours of mesh talk time and 16 hours on Bluetooth.

The trade-off is flexibility. The SRL-EXT belongs to this helmet. If you also ride with a second helmet, or your riding group uses Cardo, a universal unit may serve you better.

Using a Clamp-Style Intercom on the RF-1400

Shoei's Universal Com Holder attaches to the RF-1400 with adhesive Velcro and gives clamp-style units a place to mount without being pushed between the outer shell and the EPS liner. Shoei says it fits most clamp-style systems. It is inexpensive, so it is worth adding to any non-Sena setup.

For a Cardo, the Packtalk Edge is the balanced pick in the lineup: second-generation mesh, 40mm JBL speakers, up to 13 hours of battery and the magnetic Air Mount. Riding two-up? See our Cardo Packtalk Edge Duo review, which compares the Edge, Pro and Neo duo kits.

A Lower-Cost Option

If you mostly talk to a passenger, you don't need a flagship. Asmax sells mesh intercoms for much less than Sena or Cardo, and they mount with a clamp like any universal unit. See our Asmax intercom review for what the S1 and F1s do and don't include.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sena SRL3 fit the Shoei RF-1400?

No. Sena lists the SRL3 for the Shoei Neotec 3 and GT-Air 3 only. The Sena system made for the RF-1400 is the SRL-EXT.

Does Cardo's Shoei adapter fit the RF-1400?

No. Cardo lists its adhesive Shoei adapter for the Neotec II, GT-Air II and J-Cruise II. For the RF-1400, Shoei's own Universal Com Holder is the listed option for clamp-style units.

What is the Shoei Universal Com Holder?

A bracket that attaches to the RF-1400 with adhesive Velcro, so you don't have to wedge an intercom clamp between the outer shell and the liner. Shoei says it works with most clamp-style communication systems.

Can a Sena SRL-EXT talk to a Cardo?

According to the Cardo Packtalk Edge listing on Amazon, Cardo units with a Bluetooth 5.2 chip can connect with Sena riders through the Cardo Connect app. Mesh still works best when the whole group uses the same brand.

Bottom Line

For an RF-1400 that stays your only helmet, the Sena SRL-EXT is the intercom to buy: it is the only one built for it. If your group rides Cardo or you move the unit between helmets, mount a Packtalk Edge on Shoei's Universal Com Holder. And for simple passenger chat, an Asmax does the job for less. Skip the SRL3 and Cardo's Shoei adapter: neither is listed for the RF-1400.
