Arai Regent-X Review: vs Contour-X, Quantum-X and Signet-X
At a Glance
The Regent-X is Arai's everyday street full-face, built on the Intermediate Oval shape that fits the most common head geometry. Its shell flares 5mm wider at the base, so it is easier to pull on and off than a snug helmet usually is. If you have an average head shape and want Arai build, it is the natural starting point.
- Pick the Regent-X for an Intermediate Oval head and the simplest Arai in this group.
- Pick the Contour-X for the same shape with a newer shield and intercom-ready shell.
- Pick the Quantum-X if your head is round.
- Pick the Signet-X if your head is long and narrow.

Arai describes three shapes. Intermediate Oval is the middle ground and the most common. Round Oval is shorter front to back and a little wider side to side. Long Oval is longer front to back and narrower side to side. A quick way to read your own head: if most helmets press on your forehead and the back of your head, you probably need a longer shape; if they press on your temples, a rounder one.
Arai itself says the only real test is trying the helmet on. Wear it for several minutes, not seconds, since pressure points often show up only after a while. If you buy online, choose a seller with easy returns.
Regent-X vs Contour-X
Same head shape, different generation. The Contour-X moves to Arai's VAS-V shield, which uses a moving pivot point so the shield can sit lower, and a dual-function lever to pull the side cover and shield pin together. Its shell has flat sides for an intercom and a pocket in the neck roll to route the wires, plus a three-position chin vent with a replaceable filter and a rear spoiler with an exhaust switch.
If you plan to run an intercom, the Contour-X is the cleaner choice. If you don't, the Regent-X gives you the same fit in a simpler, often cheaper helmet.
A Note on the Regent-X Certification
Arai's own spec page for the Regent-X lists Snell M2020, while at least one current Amazon listing names Snell M2025D. Newer production may carry the newer standard. If the Snell version matters to you, check the label inside the helmet or ask the seller before you buy.
How Long Does an Arai Last?
Arai recommends replacing any of its helmets within five years of first use, following Snell guidance, and its warranty runs five years from purchase, up to seven years from the date of manufacture. That last detail matters when buying: a helmet that sat in a warehouse for years has less warranty left. Replace any helmet after an impact, even if you can't see damage.
Arai or Shoei?
Both brands certify their top street helmets to Snell and DOT, so safety standards won't decide it. Fit will. Arai publishes a shape per model; Shoei does not list one on its RF-1400 product page. If you are cross-shopping, see our Shoei RF-1400 review, which compares it directly with the Regent-X.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Arai better than Shoei?
Neither brand wins on certification: both build their top street helmets to Snell and DOT. The practical difference is fit. Arai publishes a head shape for each model, so if you know your shape, it is easier to choose within the Arai range.
How often should you replace an Arai Regent-X?
Arai says all its helmets should be replaced within five years of first use, following Snell guidance. Replace it sooner after any impact, even if it looks undamaged.
What is the difference between the Arai Regent-X and Signet-X?
Head shape. The Regent-X uses Arai's Intermediate Oval fit; the Signet-X uses Long Oval, which is longer front to back and narrower side to side. The Signet-X also uses a different shell construction, PB-SCLC.
Should I buy the Regent-X or the Contour-X?
Both use Intermediate Oval. The Contour-X is the newer design, with the VAS-V shield, flat sides and a wire pocket for an intercom, and a filtered chin vent. The Regent-X is the simpler, often cheaper option.
Bottom Line
Start with your head shape. For the most common, Intermediate Oval, the Regent-X is the straightforward Arai, and the Contour-X is worth the step up if you want the newer shield or plan to add an intercom. Round heads should go to the Quantum-X, long and narrow heads to the Signet-X. Whatever you choose, check the production date and buy from a seller with easy returns.
